Why Indoor Air Quality Testing is Important?

Indoor air quality testing is important to ensure that your home or office is free of harmful airborne contaminants. By testing the air in your indoor environment, you can identify any potential health risks and take steps to mitigate them. There are a variety of indoor air quality testing services available, so it is important to choose one that is right for your needs. A reputable testing service will use highquality equipment to test for a wide range of contaminants, including mold, dust, pollen, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The results of the test will help you to determine what, if any, corrective action is necessary to improve the air quality in your indoor space.

Many people with asthma, allergies, and other respiratory health concerns often keep a wary eye on pollution reports for outdoor weather. However, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, people spend 90% of their time indoors. That’s why the air quality testing services is very useful all of us. And it turns out that many homes and buildings contain air that is more polluted then the outdoor air in even the most industrialized cities on earth. In order to ensure your continued health and safety, it’s imperative to ascertain the presence of indoor pollutants, including dust, allergens, mold spores, and dander from animals and insects. It is important to have a healthy indoor living environment, when outdoor conditions pose considerable health risks.

One of the biggest concerns that Indoor air quality testing can identify is the existence of mold and mildew growth due to structural damage in a home or business. Ongoing moisture and mold damage issues that go unnoticed can result in a variety of costly consequences, including:

Z

Serious damage to structural elements of a home or business building

Z
Unsightly discoloration or staining of internal and external surfaces, such as walls, roofs, facades, and floors
Z
Damage to irreplaceable mementos and expensive furniture, or the loss of business equipment and inventory
Z
Expensive property insurance claims
Z
Temporary or permanent dislocation of residents
Z
Lost production time in business and industrial environments
Z
Thousands of dollars in repair costs
Z
Potential building code violations, fines, and eventual condemnation of property

While we often consider the ramifications of mold and water damage in terms of damage to physical property and structures, long term exposure to mold and mildew can have serious health consequences. These health concerns can result in years of suffering, as well as crippling medical costs. Some of the health risks associated with exposure to dangerous mold and mildew strains include:

Z
Exacerbation of pre-existing allergies and asthmatic symptoms
Z
Coughing, wheezing, and labored breathing
Z
The development of asthma, both in children and adults
Z
Respiratory tract infections
Z
Headaches and sinus infections
Z
Fever, fatigue, and cognitive impairment
Z
Pulmonary hemorrhage in infants

Xtreme Controls offers comprehensive indoor air quality testing services, so you can be assured of your safety in your home or business.

If you are concerned about the quality of the air you are breathing, contact us for comprehensive indoor air quality testing. We will test for a variety of contaminants, including mold, dust, pollen, and volatile organic compounds. Our certified inspectors gather air samples from all areas of concern throughout properties and structures, including difficult-to-reach areas, such as attics, crawlspaces, basements, and HVAC systems and ductwork. In addition, they will perform a detailed visual examination, and obtain surface samples from any suspect areas. Once we have retrieved all necessary samples, we will turn them over for analysis by a reputable third-party laboratory. The samples will be processed to detect the presence of allergenic mold spores, as well as the overall level of pollen and other free-floating debris in the air.

We can help you identify and eliminate the environmental culprits responsible for your allergies and asthma attacks.

We understand that sometimes it’s necessary to not only determine that there is a problem, but to identify it as well. In these cases, we offer specialized allergen testing that allow us to specifically identify the species or strains of mold spore, plant pollen, or pest dander (such as that from dogs, cats, dust mites, and cockroaches) that are exacerbating your medical concerns or difficulties.

Clearance Testing Protocol

Our investigating technician conducts a thorough visual inspection of all work areas in the property. Their job is to look for evidence of remaining traces of mold or moisture, and to make sure that all construction materials and by-products of our work–shavings, dust, debris–have been eliminated from the work site. As the investigator conducts his visual inspection, he also retrieves air quality testing and surface samples from all of the cleared areas of the home. All samples are accompanies by extensive notes, including information about the property, the room the sample is from, and the indoor air quality testing and outdoor quality testing environment. These notes will be used by the evaluating lab to assist in the accurate analysis of the air and surface samples.

Laboratory Testing for Mold Spores

We hold ourselves to the highest standards when it comes to mold remediation and removal, because even the smallest oversight can result in the redevelopment of mold. When this happens, the whole process of remediation must be repeated, needlessly costing property owners thousands of dollars. This is why we choose to send our clearance samples to a number of different independent well recognized third party laboratories. Once the samples have been received by the lab, they are analyzed for any evidence of unwanted mold spores that might still be present in the area following the completion of remediation. The lab ensures the validity of the testing by comparing it to outside samples, as well as samples prior to the beginning of the mold removal process. Once the lab has finished analyzing the samples and produces its results, that information is returned to us, where we put together a full report of the findings.

Mold Spore Concentrations

It should be understood that the presence of mold spores, indoors air quality testing and outdoor testing, is inescapable. Even the most diligently cleaned building will have some mold spores present, as outdoor air circulates and mixes with the indoor environment. However, in normal concentrations, such as those found outdoors, mold spores are completely harmless. The goal of mold remediation is to remove all abnormal indoor mold colonies, so that the indoor environment is roughly equivalent to the outdoor environment. The lab determines this by making sure that the strains of mold spores from the pre-remediation indoor air quality testing samples are not present in the post-remediation indoor samples, and secondly, that the post-remediation samples have spore strains and concentrations that are close to identical. If this is the case, then the lab can confirm that no cross-contamination has taken place, and that all hazardous mold infestations have been removed from your property.

Mold Clearance Certification

Once it has been conclusively determined that a home is clear of all mold contamination, Xtreme Controls will provide you with a Certificate of Clearance for the affected property. This certifies that your property has been successfully sanitized and cleared, and comes with a 3 year mold-free guarantee on our remediation work.
